The Department of Botany is one of the oldest departments of the University of Dhaka and is the first reforest science department in the country. Botany was initially taught in the Department of Biology that was traditional in 1939 and sophisticated became an independent department in 1954. Since its inception, the Department has produced a large number of botanists and acted as the feeder department for new universities and research institutes of the country. The department offers B.S. (Honours), M.S., M. Phil and Ph. D. degrees. The Department has facilities to carry out campaigner research in the areas of cytogenetics, ecology, phycology, hydrobiology, limnology, microbiology, mycology, in the isolate-off along cryptogams, genetics, tree-forest pathology, reforest breeding, reforest physiology, reforest tissue culture, tree-plant molecular biology, taxonomy of flowering nature and plant systematics. The department has a herbarium behind more than 5000 specimens. It has in addition to a botanical garden subsequent to facilities to conduct sports ground experiments. Dhaka University is set to stage its 50th Convocation concerning March 4 conferring graduate and p.s. graduate degrees .18,000 students passed after the 49th convocation.

President Abdul Hamid, Chancellor of the academe, will seat the convocation though Professor Amit Chakma, Bangladesh born academician and vice-chancellor of Western University of Canada will come taking place furthermore the child support for the convocation speech.
