The Physics Department is one of the founding departments of the University of Dhaka which began its long and glorious journey in 1921. There are approximately 700 students in the department of which 140 are enrolled in the undergraduate program annually and just nearly 100 are enrolled in the postgraduate program. On zenith of its own courses, the department with offers courses to students of optional accretion departments of the Science Faculty, for instance, Mathematics, Chemistry, Geology, Applied Chemistry and Chemical Technology.

Presently there are very roughly fifty facility members in the department. The department is standoffish to have had many distinguished physicists as its adding members along in the middle of whom were S.N. Bose and K.S. Krishnan.

It was the remarkable discovery of S.N. Dr. Walter A. Jenkins was appointed as Professor and plus the founding Head of this Department at the instruction of the instructive committee. S.N. Bose aligned as a reader in the department in 1921. A major overhaul in the scholarly system was brought into the Science Faculty during the seventies, thanks to the diligent efforts of Prof. A.K. Rafiqullah and additional members of the Physics Department. The syllabi were misrepresented accordingly and the department underwent a time of modernisation. In the associated vein, 4-year B.S. Degree was introduced in 1997 and an M.S. Program for the fifth year students was begun in 2001. New courses were introduced and a computational laboratory was set taking place a propose 2001.

Dhaka University is set to stage its 50th Convocation concerning March 4 conferring graduate and p.s. graduate degrees .18,000 students passed after the 49th convocation.

President Abdul Hamid, Chancellor of the academe, will seat the convocation though Professor Amit Chakma, Bangladesh born academician and vice-chancellor of Western University of Canada will come taking place furthermore the child support for the convocation speech.

Dhaka University (DU) will confer Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa) degree subsequent to mention to Amit Chakma though DU Vice-Chancellor Professor AAMS Arefin Siddique will dwelling it.
